Richard Richardson says
I have always called it a “Easy Out”. That is what they called in any hardware store I went in to.
Ryan Urlacher says
Roger that. I have heard it called that. I think the official label on this one is an “extractor” tool.
Richard Richardson says
Probably both if not more are right. It has been around so long that it is known by many names.
Moe says
What happens now if your extractor tool brakes while trying to take that bolt out and a little piece stays in there? Then what?..
Matt Couchman says
You have a few options. 1) drill it out and try a larger extractor tool, 2) drill it completely out and re-tap the treads, or 3) replace the part with the broken screw.

Are you changing all three holes with bike level on fluid dump? Thanx Will
Matt Couchman says
Will,
Yes we generally change fluids while level and on a lift. See you manual to see which fluids should be checked while level or on the jiffy stand.

I have had this problem myself . now when I reinstall the bolts I dress them with a little bit of anti seize . and tighten the bolts to the low side of the torque range so for so good .also I use a very small hammer to tap in the torx 27 bit into the trox head before I put any muscle on my ratchet for removal. to make sure the bit has seated into the bolt head .. hope this helps a few of my lab brothers

If your easy out breaks in the bolt it’s not so easy to drill out the tool is made from a stronger steal and can be difficult to drill without your drill bit slipping off and causing a lop sided broken tool that can’t be drilled without damage to your cover so take a small punch to the broken tools side n tap with a hammer going from one side to the other its should loosen enough to fall out or pull it out with needle nose pliers then use a reverse cut drill bit which may unscrew the bolt if not use a reverse threaded easy out that turns counter clockwise if it still wont come out then drill out top of bolt remove cover and try vise grips still wont come out? drill whole bolt depth with out drilling into the threads then retap to original size
