A Video by Bikers for Bikers!
Video-So, if you ride often and ride far in all weather and temperatures like we do here at Law Abiding Biker™ Media then you will eventually get a rock chip or deep scratch in the paint of your Harley Davidson Motorcycle. The first thing you need to do is breath and accept the fact that these things can and will happen.
Of course Harley sells paint touch up kits with your factory matched paint color and a clear coat and I paid around $38. Frustrating is that these Harley paint touch up kits come with absolutely no instructions on application whatsoever!
I have talked to quite a few different friends that work at Harley Davidson Dealerships over the years and they all have their own techniques for using and applying touch up paint. In this video I use the technique that makes the most sense for the average day-to-day biker and that actually works.
Remember, if you are looking for perfection then you are starting out with the wrong mind-set. Nothing is as perfect as the factory Harley paint job. What we are trying to do with touch up paint is make a blemish a little less noticeable. If you go into painting your scratch or rock chip with patience and understanding then you will have a good outcome.

Excellent video Brother. I had a tool bag up on my front finder on my 2014 and I did not know it scratched the hel out of it. So, I have a bigger area to do what you are showing.

I have a 2014 Street Glide Special with 2 chips in it also. I ordered the touch up kit & received 2 bottles. My color is Blackened Cayenne. The bottles are Black & a Red Sunglo. I thought it would come premixed. What goes on 1st? Or do you mix a bit of each together?? As you said there are no instructions at all. Any help with this would be a big help.

Mike,
The black goes on first as a base coat. The Red Sunglo goes on second as the top coat. The black base coat is when gives the red a dark color.

Any tricks for the black denim

HD recommends an ammonia based glass cleaner for light cleaning and dish soap for heavy cleaning. The use of polish will reduce the matte finish over time and it can’t be restored.

You might look at ColorRite too. Their kits are spot on for match, come with all the instructions, test cards etc. I used their aerosol kit to change some lower fairings from Sedona Orange to Amber Whiskey. It was easy peezy and looks real good. Around a $100 bucks and did it in my garage in 2 days.

Emmett,
That is some great info. We’ll check them out.
Thanks,

Here is a suggestion. Don’t use the cap brush. It’s too clumsy. Instead get a cheap small and narrow oil brush from an art store…then dot the paint on. The artist brush gives you a lot more control. When you wipe it off with a rag you can also use the artist brush to pull out wet paint when you have put on too much.

You can glue a small circle of 2000 grit wet paper on a pencil eraser and sand it smooth applying additional coats letting each on thoroughly for at least 24 hours between coats until chip is just shy of being completely filled the apply the clear when dry buff with a small amt of polishing compound.
