Harley-Davidson HomecomingIn this episode, we talk about the 2025 Harley-Davidson Homecoming celebration.  It will be held July 10-13, 2024 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.  The musical acts that will play in Veterans Park will be Chris Stapleton, Hank Williams Jr., and many more.  Harley-Davidson Homecoming Festival events will be held at both free and ticketed venues across the Milwaukee area, including Veterans Park, the Harley-Davidson Museum, H-D Headquarters on Juneau Ave., Harley-Davidson Powertrain Operations in Menomonee Falls, and at local Harley-Davidson dealerships. Admission to Veterans Park for live music performances and other activities requires a ticket.

LAB-388-New 2025 Harley Touring Models Released & Virtual Launch Coming

Harley-Davidson 2025 ModelIn this podcast episode, we discuss the 2025 Harley-Davidson model release of the touring models.  This is what we refer to as a soft release, meaning these are the models held over from 2024 with no real changes except for color.  We talk about what is released so far and we give our predictions on what will be released during the virtual launch held on January 23, 2025.  

As of January 2nd, Harley-Davidson revealed the following six models for 2025:

  • Street Glide
  • Road Glide
  • Road King Special
  • Freewheeler (trike)
  • Tri Glide Ultra (trike)
  • Road Glide 3 (trike)

These models appear to be largely carryovers from 2024, with no significant mechanical or cosmetic changes. This “soft launch” is typical for Harley-Davidson, saving the more substantial announcements for their virtual event on January 23rd at 5 PM CST on their YouTube channel.

Road Glide 3 & Tri Glide Ultra

Interestingly, the Road Glide 3 and Tri Glide Ultra did not see price increases for 2025. The Tri Glide Ultra received updated wheels (19-inch front, 18-inch rear) and is now available in black trim for the first time, offering additional color options.

Trim and Paint Options

Harley-Davidson continues to emphasize black trim, offering additional color options compared to chrome models. However, this trend has frustrated traditionalists who favor chrome aesthetics. Notable colors for 2025 include:

  • Mystic Shift: A dynamic shade that changes from gunmetal to orange depending on light angles.
  • Whiskey Firestorm & Midnight Firestorm: Featuring ghost flames, exclusive to black trim models.

Unfortunately, these unique options are not available for chrome trim enthusiasts.

Predictions for the Virtual Launch

On January 23rd, Harley-Davidson is expected to unveil more models and changes. Here’s what to watch for:

Full Touring Models

  • Will the Road Glide Limited and Ultra Limited finally get the 2024 fairing redesign?
  • Are these models being phased out in favor of a build-to-order system? Speculation suggests customers might start with base models and add touring packages to create full touring bikes.

Cruiser and CVO Models

  • The Cruiser lineup has yet to be revealed, leaving room for surprises.
  • The popular 2024 CVO Road Glide ST is also absent from the website. Could significant updates be on the way?

Pan America Adventure Line

The Pan America adventure bike is due for updates. Could Harley-Davidson enter the middleweight adventure market?

Final Thoughts

While the initial reveal focused on familiar models with incremental updates, the January 23rd virtual launch promises more excitement. Key questions remain about potential redesigns, pricing strategies, and the direction of Harley-Davidson’s lineup.

LAB-387-Why Are Motorcyclist Fatalities Rising While Everyone Else is Safer?

motorcyclist fatalitiesThis podcast was recorded live for our beloved Patreon members.  In our private Patreon FaceBook group a member asked others to share tips for new riders.  Lurch and I, as well as the Patreon members in private chat discuss many tips.  Motorcyclists remain an exception to the overall decline in U.S. highway fatalities, according to recent data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). In the first half of 2024, motor vehicle fatalities dropped by 3.2% compared to 2023, with declines across almost all categories, including pedestrians, bicyclists, and passenger vehicle occupants. However, motorcyclist fatalities rose by 1%, standing out as a rare increase alongside a similar rise for individuals over 65. This reflects a long-term trend where fatalities among motorcyclists, bicyclists, and pedestrians constitute a growing proportion of overall traffic deaths, while fatalities for occupants of cars and trucks decline.

Modern automotive safety features such as anti-lock brakes, traction control, and adaptive cruise control have significantly improved passenger safety, reducing crash severity. However, motorcycles, even with advanced features, remain inherently less protective in crashes. While some motorcyclists point to distracted drivers as a major cause, self-inflicted risks also play a significant role. Nearly half of fatal motorcycle crashes are single-vehicle incidents, and about 25% involve alcohol, underscoring the importance of rider responsibility in reducing fatalities.

The data serves as a sobering reminder for motorcyclists to prioritize safety. LAB-386-My New Police Harley Is In Service! Things I had to mod right away!

In this podcast episode we talk about all the modifications we did to my newly Police Harley. After getting it fully equipped with police-specific gear, it's now officially in service. Lurch and I talk about how we, as a department, decided to set up our police motorcycles, highlighting some of the specialty equipment used. While some features come factory-ready from Harley-Davidson, many others are department-specific or added by third-party vendors. Let’s dive into the details.

One of the most exciting aspects of this build was getting the green light for some performance upgrades. We installed a Stage One Kit, including a Screamin' Eagle high-flow intake and exhaust system, to improve airflow and enhance performance.

  • Screamin' Eagle Intake and Exhaust: Although we used OEM Harley-Davidson parts, the upgrades significantly improved the bike's performance, making it sound better and increase power. 
  • EFI Remapping and Tuning: After installing the intake and exhaust, we remapped the Electronic Fuel Injection (EFI) using the Screamin' Eagle tuner. While not our first choice, it got the job done. In the future, we’d recommend the Vance & Hines Fuelpak 4 tuner, available in our store, for superior performance and ease of use.

Comfort and Safety Mods

Comfort is key, especially for officers spending long hours in the saddle. The addition of adjustable levers and an extended brake pedal greatly improved both comfort and safety.

LAB-385-Motorcycle Suspension Sag | What It Is And How To Adjust It

Suspension sag refers to the amount a motorcycle's suspension compresses under certain conditions, such as the bike's weight alone or the combined weight of the bike and rider. It is a critical setting in motorcycle and vehicle suspension tuning, directly affecting handling, comfort, and stability.  

Why Suspension Sag is Important:

  • Handling: Proper sag ensures the suspension is in the optimal range of travel for absorbing bumps and maintaining traction.
  • Comfort: Reduces harshness over bumps and prevents excessive bottoming or topping out of the suspension.
  • Control: Maintains balance between the front and rear suspension, providing predictable handling in turns and on uneven surfaces.

Suspension preload refers to the initial compression applied to a motorcycle's suspension springs before any external forces, such as the weight of the bike or rider, are applied. It adjusts the suspension's starting position, influencing how much it compresses under load. Preload doesn’t change the stiffness (spring rate) of the spring itself; it only alters the amount of force required to compress the spring further.

How Preload Works:

  • More Preload: Compresses the spring further, making the suspension stiffer initially. This reduces sag and raises the ride height.
  • Less Preload: Reduces spring compression, making the suspension softer initially. This increases sag and lowers the ride height.

LAB-384-Is The Shoei Neotec 3 The Best Motorcycle Helmet?

In this episode, we review the new Shoei Neotec 3 motorcycle helmet.  As a police motorcycle officer, instructor, and avid rider, I've extensively used Shoei Neotec modular helmets since the release of the first version. My daily routine and off-duty adventures have given me ample opportunity to test a variety of modular helmets, and Shoei consistently stands out. In my opinion, modular helmets are unparalleled for their convenience—allowing me to flip up the chin bar to talk to fellow riders or get some airflow during stops, and then easily flip it back down when resuming my ride.

Key Improvements

Enhanced Face Shield Mechanism

One of the most notable upgrades in the Neotec 3 is the face shield mechanism. Previous versions featured a slight lock at the bottom detent, but the Neotec 3 introduces a mechanism that securely locks the shield in place, creating a robust seal. You’ll hear and feel a satisfying click when the shield locks. A new push-release button under the face shield's center makes this process even more user-friendly.

Centrally Located Thumb Tab

In earlier versions, the face shield's thumb tab was positioned on the left side, complicating operation for those with their left hand on the clutch lever and reaching across with their right hand, which tweaked the face shield making it difficult to operate. The Neotec 3 resolves this with a centered thumb tab, enabling smooth, ambidextrous operation. This thoughtful design change significantly enhances usability, making the shield movement effortless.

Improved Ventilation

Ventilation has also seen improvements. The chin vent now offers two positions instead of one, while the top vent, though lower in profile, maintains the familiar three positions. Additionally, the helmet's rear has been redesigned for a more modern aesthetic.

Retained Features

The Neotec 3 retains several features that Shoei fans appreciate. The helmet comes with the reliable anti-fog Pinlock inner face shield, ensuring clear vision in varying weather conditions. Shoei’s quick-release ratcheting chin buckle system remains superior to the outdated D-ring chin strap, offering ease of use even with gloves on. If your helmet does have the old D-ring system you can easily replace it with one of our high quality metal to metal ratchet buckle chin straps just like the one used on the Shoei Neotec 3.

The internal tinted sun visor continues to operate very smoothly using the external slider buttons. Just use a slider like this on a cheaper helmet and you'll see how refined the Shoei Neotec 3 is. 

Comfort and Fit

Comfort is paramount in a helmet, and the Shoei Neotec 3 excels in this area. It’s the most comfortable and in the top 2 quietest helmets I’ve worn and feels like a slipper for your head. The premium quality is immediately evident when compared to less expensive, off-brand copies.

Model Options

The Shoei Neotec 3 is available in three models: the basic Neotec, the Grasp (which I chose), and the Santori. The differences lie in color options, with the Grasp and Santori offering multi-color designs while the basic Neotec comes in solid colors. Note that older Neotec 1 and 2 face shields are not compatible with the Neotec 3 due to design changes. All models and shields are available in the Law Abiding Biker Store.

LAB-383-Organic, Semi-Sintered, and Sintered Brake Pads | Pros and Cons

Motorcycle Brake PadsIn this podcast episode, we dive deep into the different compositions of motorcycle brake pads.  We discuss the pros and cons of organic, semi-sintered, and sintered brake pads.  What does sinter mean?  We're glad you asked.  Sintering is the process of forming a solid mass of material through heat and pressure without melting to the point of liquefaction. This process involves the atoms in materials diffusing across the particle boundaries and fusing together into one piece.  In simple terms, it is combining different materials, usually but not always metals.  We give our opinions on which option is the best.

Organic brake pads are made primarily from non-metallic materials, such as rubber, glass, resin, carbon, and Kevlar fibers. These materials are bound together with a high-temperature resin, creating a compound that provides effective braking performance while remaining quieter and less harsh on the brake rotors than metallic pads. Organic brake pads are often chosen for everyday driving because they are quieter and offer a smoother feel. However, for high-performance or heavy-duty applications (like racing or towing), other materials like semi-metallic or ceramic may be better options due to their greater durability and resistance to heat.

Semi-sintered brake pads are a hybrid type of brake pad that combines the characteristics of both organic and sintered (metallic) brake pads. These pads contain a mix of organic materials and metallic particles (usually copper or steel) that are bonded under high pressure and heat. This blend creates a balanced pad that offers a middle ground between the smooth, quiet braking of organic pads and the durability and heat resistance of fully sintered metallic pads. Semi-sintered brake pads are ideal for those who want a balance between durability and smooth braking, making them suitable for a range of applications from commuter vehicles to light performance and touring bikes. They’re popular in the motorcycle world and in light to moderate performance vehicle applications, where a mix of daily usability and resilience to moderate heat is desired.

Sintered brake pads, also known as metallic brake pads, are made from a high concentration of metal particles (like copper, bronze, or steel) that are fused together under intense heat and pressure. This process, called sintering, creates a dense, highly durable material that performs well under extreme temperatures and heavy loads, making sintered pads ideal for high-performance, heavy-duty, and off-road applications.  Sintered brake pads are best for vehicles used in rugged or high-performance applications where high durability and heat resistance are necessary. They’re commonly used in motorcycles, off-road vehicles, trucks, and heavy machinery, as well as in sports cars that need powerful braking in extreme conditions.
