Harley-Davidson has released the Boom! Audio Stage 1 & 2 motorcycle audio suite of speakers & amps. Many dealerships have the varying stage 1 & 2 speakers and amps set up on site in a display box and you can take a listen. I must say I was fairly impressed with the sound in the dealership. Note that the speakers were not actually installed in a Harley, which would be the real test.

The Harley Boom!™ Box Infotainment System comes standard now on 2014 & above Harley Davidson Touring Rushmore Project motorcycles. The stock Boom Box audio system already sounds pretty good compared to previous years, but the Boom Audio Stage 1 & 2 speakers and amplifier ad ons make it even better. But, not without a hefty price tag & confusion by dealerships.
Just to get started with the batwing fairing Boom!™ Audio speakers and amp you will be over $1,000. Add more if you have the dealership do the install. And don't forget the Boom!™ Box software update that will be needed to run the amp.
In my opinion, Harley Davidson has done a poor job on their website explaining the difference between Stage I & Stage II and it is hard to navigate to understand what components and wiring kits you need to actually purchase based on your needs. It is actually pretty frustrating at the time of this article. I tried to navigate through it for you, but I'm not even completely certain.
I have spoken with several HD dealerships about this equipment and the install. Even they are frustrated and don't have all the answers as of the date of this article. They stated that HD made it a very difficult and confusing process for the mechanics.
Here is a breakdown & information:
Your Rushmore Original Equipment
- 5 1/4″ two-way speakers powered by the stock 25 watts per channel amplifier
Boom Audio Stage 1 Speakers
- 6 1/2″ two-way speakers powered by the stock 25 watts per channel
Boom Audio Stage 1 Speakers with a Boom! Audio Amplifier
- 6 1/2″ two-way speakers powered by the 75 watts per channel Boom! Audio Amplifier
Boom Audio Stage 2 Speakers with a Boom! Audio Amplifier
- 6 1/2″ three-way speakers each powered by two 75 watt amplifier channels for a total of 10 watts per speaker
Note: If you choose the upgrade with a Boom Audio amplifier then a Dealer Digital Technician software update is required. Basically, they have to flash your Boom!™ Box system to work with the new amp(s). Harley dealerships are charging for this service.
Consider purchasing any components by clicking our Adventure Harley Davidson affiliate link if you appreciate this information. No additional cost to you, but we get a small kickback on any purchased items.

Ryan – Can you compare the Harley Stage 1/2 audio against the Hog Tunes? It would seem to me that unless there is something REALLY better with the OEM available, the Hog Tunes setup is better/faster/cheaper… I have not had the chance to hear both setups, but I have heard the demo at Harley on the Stage 1/2… Nice inside a warehouse building but how does it sound at 80mph on a bike with a helmet?
Ryan Urlacher says
Not much difference really between the two. We are testing others too. I listened to the Harley Boom Stage 2 at Sturgis and it was actually installed on a bike. Sounds much different than HD dealerships, who have it installed in a wall etc. Much less punch and sound when installed an a Harley. I had them isolate front and rear in the demo too. Not everyone will install front and lid speakers. As with all systems you are only going to get so much in the fairing speakers and stock boxes. The lid speakers ad most the bass and are great for around town. All lid speakers will loose effectiveness at freeway speeds as the sound is now well behind you. The HD stage 2 sounds good. Hogtunes sounds just as good in my opinion and a lot less money. Don’t forget we have our very popular Hogtunes install video available. https://www.lawabidingbiker.com/hogtunes
Chicken Wing says
Thanks Ryan. That’s what I figured. I appreciate your no BS reviews and I did watch the video. Winter project for sure as the sum will fade to snow here in spokane eventually. Ride safe, ride often. Paul

Your very welcome……..don’t even want to think about snow…

I had decided to go with the Hog Tunes amp and 2 speakers for my 2015 SGS. However the Harley dealership is telling me that the Hog Tunes product will have problems when the infotainment system gets an update. The guy is doing everything to talk me into a stage 2 setup. Is it only about the money or is he making some factual points?
Lurch says
Hogtunes uses a high level input and doesn’t require a dealer software flash. Updates should not effect the Hogtunes system. He’s trying to upsell you to a HD system.
Shawn nelson says
Ryan,
I have a ’14 StreetGlide special, and originally bought the stage 1 Harley 6.5″, and stage one lid speakers. I just had them install a Hogtunes 4 channel amp, and stage II harley fairing speakers. This way I was able to power the rear speakers with the factory Boom stereo, and then 2 amp channels to each fairing speaker. When I first went to the dealership, you could hardly hear the rear speakers, so they re-flashed the radio, and brought back the fader option. When I went back to pick it up, all 4 speakers sounded ok and loud. Well today was the first time i was able to ride it and listen. NOT Happy !!! the stage II fairing speakers sound like loudspeakers, hardly any bass, and just not high quality. the Lids sound just as good as they did with the Harley amp. Any advice as to what I should do now? is it true I cannot power the rears with the radio, and re-install the harley amp for the stage II fairing?
Hikervt says
Ryan- Very excited, last night I picked up my brand new 2016 street glide special. Before heading to the dealer, I had them install the boom stage II speakers and amp. Well… when the Tech was showing me the system and how it sounded, I noticed he turned the switch to start, not to the accessory position and proceeded to show me the sound. I saw the headlight on, so I reached up in front of him and switched it to the accessory position. The sound shut off, the radio itself stayed on. I looked at the tech puzzled and he told me its designed that way which I have a hard time believing. Now I can’t play the radio in Accessory (head light off). I read a ton on the forums last night and found nothing / very little information about the boom system itself. There was ton about aftermarket systems, but not much about the boom. Can you help me out and confirm if this is how the radio should work? No sound in the accessory position?
Ryan Urlacher says
Awesome on the 2016!! Enjoy the heck out of it. The answer is “no” that is not normal. I was down in Sturgis and looked at bikes at the HD booth running the Boom Stage II system. They had it installed on bikes. They were in the accessory position when doing demos. Big Daddy here at Law Abiding Biker has a Boom Audio system with amp on his Ultra Classic 2014 and he can play it in the accessory position just fine. HD screwed up on that one. Sorry for the bad news.
Hikervt says
Thanks a bunch for taking the time to write me back. Well bad news or not, at least I know it can be fixed. I can’t imagine not being able to listen to the radio without having the headlight on. From all I have been reading it sounds to me like he plugged the remote turn on wire into the wrong place, if that is possible with a plug and play harness. I think I need to take a look under the fairing myself before I bring it back. Hopefully he didn’t splice something..
Sounds like a good time in Sturgis brother, I gotta get out there one of these years. I’m on the east coast, will be a fun ride. Take care..
R. Kane says
Sounds like he ran the hot wire for the amp to the ignition rather than to the battery. Only explanation I can give.
Ryan Urlacher says
Roger that. I totally agree. He plugged something in wrong for sure.
R. Kane says
The Tri Cities, WA dealer, like many dealers I am finding via the forums, have limited experience with the Stage 2 equipment and download. Stage 1 units are still confusing even to 2 Master Techs I have spoken to. I was told Stage 2 from 1 was easy. Wrong! My advice is go Stage 2 from the get go because if you install the amp and stage 1 there is no easy way going back. The book for 2016 does have s good listing of needed items but not one parts guy or truck knew what they were or had installed them.
Your system should work in accessory. That’s just the track making up an excuse for making a mistake. Hell they forgot to replug in a fuel gage on my bike once.
Ryan Urlacher says
Thanks for weighing in R. Kane. You have a ton of knowledge and I know the community appreciates it.
Hikervt says
Well I went to a different dealer and the tech immediately knew what was wired wrong as he’s fixed this before. The remote turn on wire for the amp was plugged into the same style connector that powers a fender tip light (which only gets power when in the start postion).. The connector for the remote turn on connects up in the vicinity of behind the amp meter. Once this was changed I had sound in the accessory position. Thanks to all for your input!
R. Kane says
Glad to hear it.
Ryan Urlacher says
Thanks again for being involved in this matter R. Kane. You are a wealth of knowledge.
Ryan Urlacher says
Glad you finally found one that knew what he was doing. Glad you got it figured out. Thanks for the posts and for being involved in the community.
Papabear says
i have the stage II boom fairing in my 2016 roadglide special and it sounds good and it does play in accessory mode !!
Matt Couchman says
That is weird. I have a stage II on a 2015 RGS. It does play in accessory mode.
Gary Dyer says
My dealer said I also needed to buy the 54 amp charging system because the stock unit can’t handle the 4 speaker/2 amp set up. He quoted $3500 installed. I ran away real quick.
Ryan Urlacher says
Yah, that is a total up sell by HD…..That’s my opinion anyways.
R. Kane says
My system so far appears to be handling the amp and stage 1’s. I haven’t seen huge movement on the voltage meter. But the bikes 1 year old. I keep it on a trickle charger so I guess I’ll find out if my battery goes out. The dealer/book suggests it. Guess I’ll see if my battery last a shorter time frame.
Vito Garcia says
I currently bought the Stage 1 for my 2015 Electra Glide. I am now told the Stage 2 is better, is this true? Also,
Why is the stage 1 sound less while motorcycle is on. Once I turn off bike music gets louder.
Lurch says
The stage 2 speakers are 3 way speakers with one channel of the amp going to the woofer and another going to the mids and highs. So you have better speakers and more power. I’m not sure about the difference with the bike running or not reference the stage 1. We are installing a stage 2 system on my RGS this weekend. Video to follow.
Matt Gill says
For what Boom audio costs you can have a much better audio system with after market components. EX: Cerwin Vega B2 (or the new B52) $150 150wattsX2 at 4ohm and 250 watts X2 at 2 ohms, paired up with a set of $250 (or so) Arc Audio Moto 602 6.5″ speakers, and a $75 Biketronics BT355 line leveler, and no flash needed. Way better sound than the Boom Stage 1 or 2 with amp.
Even better set up is Biketronics BT7P14 kit with 7.1 speakers that come with brackets to replace the pods for better sound and their BT2180 amp, BT355 line leverler and everything you need to hook it up for $680 with the sale going on this weekend.
And you don’t need a larger charging system with these small class D amps, unless you are running subs or something crazy and your lights are dimming.
Ryan Urlacher says
Thanks for weighing in Matt. We installed 3 other systems.

Hi Ryan,
i am working on a project to install Lower fairing with stage 2 speaker and stage 2 amp on my Fatboy. i have successfully installed touring crash guard and lower fairing. after reading some of the comments i am now wondering if the AMP can be work alone without the Boom Stereo. i was thinking of adding smaller boom audio to get the aux in to work with my phone.
please suggest if you feel that the setup can work.
thanks
Ryan Urlacher says
Ooooh man Rohit. That Boom Stage 2 amp will only work with the Boom Box Stage 2 Kit system and Boom Box head unit. It has a plug that comes out of the Boom Box head unit and into that amp. It would be some weird crazy hack to even try to get it to work in some way with any other head unit… 🙁
Pete says
I have a 2016 Roadglide standard. The front speakers are ok, But no good enough. Normally I would find a Eclipse 8 volt dead head radio unit to install. However because of all the controls and options I want to keep the OEM head unit. However I want more Power / Volume and Clarity. I also would like to install a Amp and saddlebag lid 6×9’s. I have four questions.
Do your videos cover the Roadglide ??
Would you suggest auto speakers or marine speakers for washing and weather ???
What amp would you suggest to power the 6×9’s without over powering the 6.5 speakers or reverse under powering the 6×9′ ???
When installing all my auto speakers if I can use polyfill I do, As it adds more bass and sound. It tricks the speaker to think it is in a bigger box while installed in small ones. In the video clip I seen you did not use polyfill in the fairing’s internal speaker box. Why not ?????
Ryan Urlacher says
Yes, we cover Road Glide. I’d recommend marine speakers for weather. I’d get ahold of the amp/speaker company of your choice and field any amp questions. We don’t feel the need for polyfill and installed per the manufacturer. Certainly use it if you want.
Pete says
I have a Sony XAV-7000 in my Street Glide, and it came with the Scosche pigtail to maintain use of the stock bar controls. It’s loud and clear with Boom Audio II speakers.

I also just bought a 2016 street glide special,, I’ve been looking at your videos and seeing reviews on the limited sound systems available,,, seems to me the HD stage II is overpriced (go figure) and does not sound great,,, the JM ROKKER looks like a decent product but I want fairing and rear lid speakers with an amp, of course,,, but I don’t see that they sell it for my bike,,, so i’m down to a HOGTUNES choice… they are probably decent but I want something nice,, not just decent… suggestions for my year and model anyone?
Ryan Urlacher says
I’d call J&M and ask about their lid speaker solution. I’m almost certain they have one Russ.
Benny says
Is it worth just changing the speakers in the batwing to avoid having to flash the bike or would you recommend an amp?
Ryan Urlacher says
Definitely recommend an amp Benny.
Aaron Harkness says
I bought the J&M speakers without the amp for my 2016 RGS.. I am now looking into an amp. The stock system just can’t handle ANY power at all. Almost seems quieter than before, that’s how much power the J&M set-up draws. I think in the end, it’ll be great. The speakers sound excellent. One tip I would give though…. Buy longer screws for the J&M Speakers. The thickness of the frame (being about 3/16ths thicker is just enough to cause you to strip a screw. When, I did the left side (after I stripped one on the right speaker and learned of this issue) there was a slight rattle due to the base of the speakers and my fear of overtightening. Got the longer screws, added a strip of foam tame to the backside of the speakers (I’m an HVAC guy so I have tons of it) and now it sounds SUPERB (aside from the lack of volume) after getting the screws fairly tight. I fear this may be the issue for many people dissatisfied with the J&M sound.
Ken C says
I just upgraded to the Stage 2 set up with amp on my 2016 Road Glide. The system sounds better then the stock radio for sure but it almost sounds like the mids are not there. It almost sounds like its all treble and bass. Would that be a flashing issue? Did the dealer not flash the software properly?
Ryan Urlacher says
Correct. You must look over the dealerships back when they are flashing. Look through all the options and boxes they can check. Many dealerships have flashed the systems wrong. And yes, it will destroy the sound quality if the wrong flash is in there. Make them do it right.
Scott Bryce says
I have a stage 2 with speakers in my bags and 2 faring. Each pair run off their own amplifier I’m putting lowers on and want speakers in that as well for a total of 6. Can i hook into one of my existing amps or do I need a third to run the lower faring speakers???
Thanks

Scott,
Yes, if all of your channels on your amps are taken. No, If you have a channel left on one of your amps.

Could u please help… I ride a 2015 road glide ultra cvo, and recently I installed the detachable rack, and currently riding the bike with no tour pak, accordingly, with no rear speakers.
I purchased the fairing stage 2 speakers, and also, the saddle bag rear stage 2 speakers along with the saddle bag lids.
I assume that I don’t need the amplifier as it is already installed as stock.
Will I need anything else for such upgrade?
Appreciate ur advise.
Ryan Urlacher says
you’ll need the amp to run the rear lid speakers Alec.
David J Triguero says
I have 2016 CVO Ultra Limited, with Boom Audio stage 1 fairing and rear trunk speakers. The rear speakers sound fine but the front speakers distort with any bass givin to them. Is this a flash problem. Harley tells me to turn down the bass and adjust the fader, I say BS. The Tech swares I’m hearing things. Been playing music all my life, i know when a speaker is blown or over driven….Help?
Ryan Urlacher says
Yup, should not have that problem. We don’t have distortion and we turn the fronts all the way up on volume. REMEMBER THOUGH, WE PUT IN THE STAGE 2 SET UP. And we add base. No problems w/ stage 2 speakers. Stage 1 should sound great I would think. I’d say they have flashed your bike system incorrectly. It happens often by dealerships across the US. We have many reports of improper flashing. Unfortunately, the dealerships are the only ones that have the software, but many have no training on how to properly use it and flash a bike. We had to look over our local dealerships shoulders. They actually flashed it wrong and we were able to look at the screen and see a couple boxes they had checked that were wrong. I’d tell them you want to look at the screen when they are flashing it. It’s just boxes they check.
Steve T says
Ryan,Any idea if the stage 2 front kit can be put in a 2012 street glide?

Eric says
in my 14 limited I used stae 1 speakers with the stock 25 watt boom box and it sounded significantly better than the stock speakers. It was worth the money. I traded that bike for a 14 cvo limited last year which has the full stage 1 setup. It sounds better yet. I’m apprehensive about the stage two system with all the complaints and Harley recently showing “final sale” on stage 2 components on their website. I wish Harley would do a good job on quality whatever the cost. that is most important. Their charter should be we will produce the best system on the market for our bikes including all after market options.

I bought a J&M Rokker amp and fairing speakers for my 17 Street Glide. I am highly disappointed! I called the folks at J&M and they want me to pull the speakers, amp, plus the factory radio and send it all to Tucson to be flashed. What a joke, I don’t have the time or the patience for that.
Ryan Urlacher says
That’s too bad. Hope you get it all resolved. We’ve had no problems with our J&M products.

I recently purchased a 2014 CVO limited, and while playing with the boom box, realized that I didn’t have any sound from the front right speaker. I thought maybe it was a blown speaker, but when I removed it, and hooked it to the left side, it worked fine. I also uploaded the latest software, and checked the wiring, to no prevail. Hi Ryan,
I have as much Boom Audio that can be installed on a 2016 Street Glide Special.
my only issue is that the Saddlebag Amp is held on by double faced tape that comes loose after about

Any ideas?

Hey Ryan, I seen you video of you talking about the Harley Boom radio with the Hog Tunes Amp and front fairing speakers for your 2014 Street Glide. Dan,
According to Hogtunes website, you still don’t need to flash on the 2019.

Hey, I just came across this article and the discussion thread that followed it, and I wonder if you have any thoughts on my issue. I picked up a 2019 Limited a little less than a month ago. As part of the initial deal, I had them install the Stage 1 4-speaker setup with amp, but I had the bike for about a week and a half before the parts came in. With the original speakers and the fade set to the middle, front and rear volume were about equal. I could lean back a little and clearly hear the rears, as I could on my ’04 Classic with the Harley add-on speaker/amp kit. With the Stage 1 kit installed, the rears are about half the volume of the fronts. I mentioned this to the service department, and they said something about the fronts being louder on purpose because too much sound from behind can be disorienting (I’ve heard of something like this in cars, but I still call BS). The mechanic looked at it, and basically moved the fade more to the rear and then turned to volume up so they’re shout equal, but this seems like a workaround to me rather than a legitimate solution.
Is it possible it didn’t get flashed properly, or is there maybe a loose connection somewhere? If either of these is a possibility, I just have to figure out how to persuade them to take a second look.
Daniel Lopez says
Hi Ryan,
I recently purchased your how to install the Boom Audio Stage II amp and speaker kit video for my 2019 RG Special. The install went great, every detail was right on. Sure made this install easy.
I took my bike to the dealer to have them flash my radio and amp. It seems to be doing ok, it’s definitely loader. However, I can’t tell any noticeable difference when making changes to the base or treble.
Is there a possibility the flash wasn’t done correctly?
Ryan Urlacher says
yah, that’s strange. You should notice a difference. I’d have them check it again.
