In this video, I show you how to install a powered KLR lower dash panel on your 2nd generation (2008-2018) Kawasaki KLR 650. I installed this dash on my 2018 Kawasaki KLR and have really enjoyed it. Sturgis 80th Annual Motorcycle Rally Will Go On with COVID-19 Modifications

On Monday, June 15, 2020, the Sturgis City Council voted to hold the 80th annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally with modifications despite concerns of COVID-19. (see video below)

By a 8-1 vote, the city voted to hold the Rally with modifications. Parking on Main Street will be normal while seating will not be allowed in the plaza. City officials say that the Rally will be scaled down and that the main focus is to keep residents and visitors safe.

“There’s not going to be a lot of the public activities that there usually are so including the opening ceremonies, the B1 flyover, different contests and activities and parades and things that we usually do during the Rally we would not be doing that because that really does encourage and if you see any of the photographs there tends to be thousands of people lined on the Main Street,” said Dan Ainslie, the Sturgis City Manager. “We’re trying to avoid that.”

Extra sanitary measures will be in place which will include hand sanitizing stations throughout the city and disinfecting sidewalks every night.

If conditions change over the next seven weeks, the mayor has the right to make necessary adjustments up to and including the cancellation of the Rally entirely.

“I'm very pleased with the city council's decision to join the 2020 rally this year,” said Randy Peterson of Sturgis.com, the original site dedicated to promoting the Sturgis Rally. “A sampling of more than 50 local businesses and campgrounds had already stated they would be open for business, but with the City's involvement, necessary municipal services will be provided within city limits.”

The City's involvement in the rally will allow the sale of vendor permits within the City and Main Street will be closed off to motorcycle-only traffic.

The City's decision only affects what happens within City limits, not the rest of the Black Hills region. To date, neither the State of South Dakota nor any Black Hills' government has suspended rally events.

The 80th Anniversary of the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally will be held Aug. 7-16, 2020. Concerts such as ZZ Top, Puddle of Mud, Black Label Society, Ratt, Eagles of Death Metal, Buckcherry, Lita Ford, and the Reverend Horton Heat will be taking place.

Sturgis City Manager Daniel Ainslie presented the council with four options for the 2020 Sturgis Motorcycle Rally–1. Cancel the Rally; 2. Postpone and Prepare; 3. Modified 80th; 4. Hold the 80th. By an overwhelming majority, the city council voted to implement option 3–Modified 80th.

Here are the restrictions in Ainslie’s report for the 80th annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally:

Cancel opening ceremonies
Cancel activities (5k, contests, etc.)
Cancel use of fairgrounds
Cancel B-1 flyover
Cancel photo towers
Cancel noon and 5 p.m. photos
Cancel H-D Rally Point bands
Cancel H-D Rally Point contest
No bike parking on sides from Junction to 3rd to allow for plazas and outdoor seating

Ainslie’s report also included safeguards to be implemented:

PPE stockpiled for local businesses
Purchase PPE for employees
Sanitation stations along Main Street
Increased sanitation of PortaPots
Disinfect sidewalks

Vendors will be working with the following restrictions:

Guidelines for distancing at register
Guidelines for PPE
Guidelines of occupancy

City rides will still happen, though advertising will be pulled to lower the number of attendees at the 80th Sturgis Motorcycle Rally.

These guidelines were the result of the monitoring of infection rates locally and in surrounding areas, a survey of Sturgis households, consultation with over 100 agencies in the Black Hills region, discussion with state and county officials, local health care providers, the local school district, a community town hall meeting, and rally fans.

New Leaked Future Harley-Davidson Models!

In this video, I reveal to you two new anticipated Harley models that are very interesting. Oh, and I talk about a few other new models and what’s going on at Harley. Images of these two new bikes first appeared in documents released to Harley-Davidson investors, but since then Harley has filed design patents with the European Union Intellectual Property Office. (see video below)

We know now that both the Pan America Adventure and Bronx Streetfighter, which were announced in late 2019, will have the Revolution Max engine and it seems that the same engine will be carried over to the two newest models I talk about in the video.

Harley Cafe´ Racer

The first bike is a flat tracker that seems to be loosely modeled off the XG750R and it appears it will be equipped with the 115-hp, 70-pound-feet, 975cc Revolution Max engine, the same as on the Bronx Streetfighter. There is also the 145-hp, 90-pound-feet, 1,250cc version of the Revolution Max engine and the two engines are externally identical. So, it would be easy for Harley to use the larger engine instead. Maybe it will come in two displacement options?

The second bike is a cafe´ racer and like the flat tracker it also appears it may have the smaller 975cc engine version, but it would be easy to use that larger 1,250cc engine instead, but we'll have to see. This cafe´ racer model is likely to appear later this year as a 2021 model. The chassis is again similar to the Bronx and the flat tracker and has the same front suspension and brakes. Although the bike is definitely a cafe´ racer it sill has a very Harley flare to it.

Sony XAV-AX7000 vs Harley Boom Box GTS! Pros & Cons

As of November 2019, Harley-Davidson made it possible to upgrade your older Boom Box system to the new 2019 Boom Box GTS on those 2014-2018 touring models. Visiting Harley's website, it seems they are marketing and describing this conversion kit more towards upgrading from the smaller 4.3 non-touchscreen unit to the new GTS unit but you can upgrade from either the smaller 4.3 unit or the larger 6.5 GT unit. This replacement GTS unit will cost you between $1600-$1800 plus labor. But, there's no need to pay a dealership to do this as we did a completely free tutorial video on our YouTube Channel on this titled “New Harley Boom Box GTS Conversion-How to Retrofit & Upgrade”.

There is an alternative to the Harley Boom Box GTS and it's called the Sony XAV-AX7000, but there are some things you should be aware of. (see video below)

The pros of the Sony XAV-AX7000 Harley Boom Box Replacement:

The replacement Sony system has standard am/fm and it has both Apple Car Play and Android Auto baked in and they will function if your smartphone is plugged into one of the USB ports. It has a full 7″ touchscreen and is very sleek. You can buy a XAV-AX7000 bundled kit from certain companies that will allow it to install and function when installed on your Harley-Davidson. With Apple Car Play and Android Auto, you'll be able to use Apple Maps and Google Maps for navigation. Another nice feature is that with the Sony XAV-AX7000 you'll maintain your factory handlebar toggle control functions but with several limitations.

Further, the Sony XAV-AX7000 plays FLAC files on USB drives and includes Bluetooth hands-free calling and audio streaming. You can also jam to your favorite playlists on Pandora or Spotify if you use those instead of your pre-loaded Apple or Android music. The unit is also compatible with a SiriusXM satellite radio tuner. And, it comes with a 1-year warranty.

The Sony unit also has dual USB inputs and has 45 watts RMS per channel and five 5-volt preamp outputs.

The cons of the Sony XAV-AX7000 Harley Boom Box Replacement:

The Sony XAV-AX7000 is not a marine-grade like the Boom Box system is. So, you'd need to be careful if riding in heavy rains and when washing your Harley. Additionally, you won't see your EITMS on/off-screen or oil pressure like on the Boom Box. You'll also only get limited functionality with the use of your control toggles. Sony says the buttons on the front and screen are “weatherproof”, so that's helpful, but it's not “waterproof” like the Boom Box GTS, which is a sealed unit. The back of the Sony has holes and cutouts and moisture could certainly get in. Moisture can certainly get inside your front fairing, so it's something to be aware of.

The XAV-AX7000 has a microphone included with a wire that you normally route inside a quiet car. Using this microphone for voice commands or phone calls with the wind and noise would be less than practical on a motorcycle going down the freeway at 80 mph. At slower speeds, you may get some functionality if you lean close to the mic.

The XAV-AX7000 only has a handsfree profile “HFP” and not a headset profile “HSP”. That means you cannot pair a wireless Bluetooth headset directly with the unit, but you can pair your smartphone with it because of the HFP profile. This is similar to the Boom Box system but you can add the additional wireless headset interface module “WHIM” to get the HSP profile with the Boom Box GTS. There is no ad-on for the Sony unit to get the HSP profile.

So, you'll need to pair your wireless Bluetooth headset directly with your smartphone and then have your smartphone plugged in via the USB port to use Apple Car Play or Android Auto. You can then give commands to your phone which will then bring things up on the Sony unit.

Further, because the unit lacks the HSP profile, you'll lose your Harley intercom and CB functionality.

The Sony XAV-AX7000 doesn't have built-in GSP like the Boom Box GTS does and you cannot pay to have it added on like the older Sony XAV-AX5000. So, in those areas without cell service, you won't have the backup internal GPS.

The Sony is not compatible with Harley Boom amplifiers, but it is compatible with all other aftermarket amps.

Remember, that the Sony XAV7000 unit was made for a car and that's why you need to buy a kit or bundle of things to make this conversion possible with the Harley. There are companies around that sell complete kits. The wiring has to be converted to work with your Harley wiring.

Obviously, the Sony XAV-AX7000 is a much cheaper option than the Boom Box GTS if you don't care about the above-mentioned items and limitations.
