LAB-210-Why He Switched to a Harley-Davidson Trike & Real Biker Talk-Special Guest Rick Kane Sr.

This episode is just a plain “biker talk” as we dive in and get to know Rick Sr. better and hear some cool old biker stories.  Rick Sr. is the father of Rick “Big Daddy” Kane, who oversees the Law Abiding Biker Store. There's nothing better than talking to wise old bikers who have been around to really see the industry change.
Rick has been riding motorcycles for a very long time and he reminisces of the many different makes and models he's owned.  He been in a couple of motorcycle accidents during his years of riding, one being fairly serious. Because of that incident, Rick has had some physical limitations as he ages and riding a two-wheel motorcycle has become difficult.
Rick recently decided to switch to a Harley-Davidson trike and it has been an entirely new experience for him. The beautiful thing is that Rick can keep riding with his knees in the breeze on his new Harley-Davidson trike. He even has some longer motorcycle road trips planned this year.
At some point, I am going to ride and do a review of Rick's new Harley-Davidson trike and release that video on our YouTube channel.

LAB-209-Harley-Davidson is Making Electric Bicycles & Scooters?

Harley Electric BicycleHarley-Davidson, Inc. announced that it has acquired StaCyc, Inc.,  They produce 12 and 16 EDRIVE, electric-powered bicycles specifically designed for kids. As a subsidiary, a Harley-Davidson branded version of StaCyc’s 12-inch and 16-inch models will be sold through select Harley-Davidson dealers. These Harley branded electric bikes will be available in the U.S. in the third quarter of 2019.

It also appears Harley-Davidson is working on smaller electric scooters. They provided some prototypes to X-games athletes to ride around and they promoted them on Instagram. Many are wondering if they'll have an actual electric scooter model to put on the floor and sell to customers any time soon.

Why is Harley-Davidson focusing on all these electric bicycles and scooters? My opinion is that Harley is realizing that many older Harley Electric Scootergeneration riders are fading and they really need to grab the attention of the younger generation who have many choices. They want to get the Harley brand introduced to young riders of bicycles and scooters, thus when they get older they'll consider a Harley-Davidson motorcycle. They want to continue to create brand loyal riders as they have for many years.  Additionally, they just released their first electric motorcycle, the LiveWire, in late 2018 and they're likely learning much about electric vehicles with the bicycles and scooters, so they can be a leader in that market in the future.

Don't worry, I don't believe Harley is trying to get out of the game of traditional motorcycles that has driven the company for so many years. They are just realizing that change and innovation is the only way to survive and compete in the future.

In this episode, Lurch and I discuss a  recent UCLA study, funded by Harley-Davidson,  that says motorcycling reduces stress and increases alertness.  A study from the Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior, at the University of California, Los Angeles, seems to confirm that. Three UCLA researchers studied more than 50 motorcycle riders in tests that recorded their brain activity and hormone levels before, during and after riding a bike, driving a car and resting. Did they prove there are potential mental and physical benefits of riding your motorcycle? Well, listen in to this podcast episode and find out as we break it down for you.

Next, we talk about that fact that motorcycle lane splitting or lane Lane Splittingfiltering may be legalized and coming to your state in 2019? California is still the only state where lane splitting is legal and many other states are watching closely. Unfortunately, lane splitting has become a rather controversial topic. Mostly by those that don't understand the many benefits of motorcycle lane splitting & don't ride motorcycles themselves.

The following states are in different stages of possibly legalizing lane splitting:

Maryland, Connecticut, Utah, Oregon, Texas, and Hawaii. If legalized, each state has its own ideas and rules on how motorcycle lane splitting can be done. Things such as whether it can only be done when traffic is stopped and at what speeds you can actually do it.

This is a straight up biker talk BS session and Lurch and I have a ton of fun talking with Scooter. This was Scooter's first time on a Podcast and he did well.  He is a member of the Sworn Few Law Enforcement Motorcycle Club & spent the day here at Law Abiding Biker™ Media filming a tutorial video for our YouTube Channel. This was also his first time behind the scenes filming and watching the process. Scooter helped out with lighting and other tasks and was a big help!

Scooter is no stranger to the many who follow Law Abiding Biker™ Media, as he appeared in our Nevada & California Motorcycle Trip Documentary Film and our most recent Midwest Motorcycle Trip Documentary Film. During the Midwest Motorcycle Trip documentary, which I highly suggest every biker watch, Scooter attempted the steak challenge at the Big Texan in Amarillo, Texas and it was quite an ordeal. This is a famous food challenge that is unbelievable to watch. Although Scooter wasn't able to complete the challenge, he gave it his all. Scooter discusses the steak challenge in detail in this podcast episode.

  • Harley pros:
    • For a tall rider, the Harley Road Glide special is very comfortable.  The Street Glide is tighter for tall guys, but both excellent riding positions.
    • Lots of accessory options with Harley. Way more than Indian!
    • More saddlebag space in Harley
    • Milwaukee-eight 107″ ci motor has great power. Harley 107 ci motor has a touch more acceleration than the Indian Thunderstroke 111 with air, exhaust, and EFI tuner upgrades on both. So, the Milwaukee-eight 114″ motor will definitely have more power. 
    • Accessories from manufacturer cost a bit less for Harley compared to Indian.
    •  More dealers nationwide f0r Harley-Davidson
    • Harley has a long history with the brand and bikes
    • Harley touring models have a larger fuel tank for riding cross-country
    • Many aftermarket HD accessories work and fit well. Beware of some aftermarket parts for Indian.
  • Harley Cons:
    • With the Harley Boom!™ Box Infotainment System you have to add an expensive Wireless Headset Interface Module (WHIM) in order to have Bluetooth headset paring. And you have to buy a Harley stamped Sena Bluetooth headset in order to get full functionality and stereo sound. 
      • The Indian Ride Command® system is ready to pair with any major brand Bluetooth headset and you get full functionality. You don't have to add anything on.
    • Some Harley Dealerships are treating their customers very poorly by stating they'll void warranties if a customer adds an aftermarket air intake or mufflers. This is ridiculous & Harley-Davidson dealerships doing this should be ashamed. They are trying to force customers to buy only Harley stamped products and pay mechanics to install simple things. 
    • Service at Harley dealerships-You want to trust they know everything but the fact is that many dealers are not up to speed and properly trained on the emerging technology such as the Boom!™ Box Infotainment System. 
  • Indian pros:
    • Quality bike. Nice touches. Offering traditional styling and new limited editions. 
    • Technology-Ride Command infotainment system works great! Bluetooth built in. Just pair a Bluetooth headset. GPS updates are free for the first 3 years! Indian uses Navi Extras for the GPS maps. 
      • Harley uses Navi Extras for the GPS maps but you must pay $150 to $200 to upgrade your GPS maps in the Boom Box Infotainment System
    • Charger in the saddlebag for electronics comes stock on the Indian
    • Paint is fantastic-Love the color matched inner fairing & front fairing
    • Thunder stoke 111 ci motor has lots of torque. Milwaukee-eight 107 is better in higher gears. Both bikes with similar aftermarket upgrades
    • Smooth/quieter transmission shifts than on the Harley. Not clunky. 
    • Easier oil changes on Indian. One hole. 
    • Electronic saddlebag lock & unlock electronically. A nice feature that's not available on Harley. 
  • Indian Cons:
    • Indian is owned by Polaris, who make a ton of other things. Are they really focusing on the Indian or on their many other products?
      • Harley is primarily focused on producing motorcycles
    • Small saddlebag compared to Harley. The design is an illusion and looks very big from the outside, but inside it's significantly less space
    • Indian has a smaller gas tank. Harley has a 6-gallon gas tank. Indian has only a 5.5-gallon and you should you pack an extra gallon of fuel if riding cross-country with Harley touring riders?
    • Fairing feels more in the face compared to Harley Road Glide. Similar to a Harley Street Glide feel. Taller riders on the Indian will need to adjust at first but you can get used to it.
    • Much more limited options on aftermarket products for Indian
      • Expensive parts compared to Harley
    • A much smaller network of Indian dealerships.

LAB-205-What’s Up With The 2019 Harley FXDR 114? Hot or Not?

Harley-Davidson FXDR 114This episode is all about the 2019 Harley-Davidson FXDR 114. This new motorcycle was released in late 2018 and at that time I took it for a test ride. To get all the details, check out my Harley FXDR 114 test ride and overview videos on YouTube.

The Harley-Davidson FXDR 114 rides great considering it has a 240 mm rear tire on an 18” wheel. The 19” front wheel with a 120 mm wide front tire works well with the rear tire size. The new cast aluminum swingarm and inverted front forks with cartridge dampening both round it out to make a good cornering motorcycle. I was actually very impressed with its abilities.

The Harley-Davidson FXDR 114 has the Milwaukee-Eight 114 motor (1868 cc) and produces 119 ft lbs of engine torque. It will throw some heat up at your legs so be aware of that. Standard with the FXDR is an LED headlight, signals, and taillight. The Harley FXDR 114 comes with a 6-speed transmission, cable clutch, and comes standard with ABS. It’s equipped with a 4.4-gallon fuel tank and Harley says it gets an estimated 46 mpg.

The new Harley Livewire electric motorcycle has caused quite a stir within the Harley community. I posted a YouTube video when it was first announced and wow, you should read the comments. They range from complete understanding, to anger at the pricetag, to absolute rejection that Harley would even consider an electric motorcycle.

Whether you are personally interested in an electric motorcycle or not, Harley must look to the future and they clearly realize the electric motorcycle will be a slice of the overall market. This is only the first iteration of the Livewire and Harley's first attempt at the market.

This does not change anything for the traditional Harley owner, so don't be fearful. All the regular Harley models are still available and the internal combustion engine is not going away any time soon. You should likely be happy that Harley is looking to the future and figuring out how they are going to stay in existence. If they aren't progressive & tapping into all related markets then they will die and none of us will be riding Harley's anymore.

Don't buy a Livewire if you're not interested in electric motorcycles, but you should hope that Harley sells many of them to those interested customers, so they can profit and continue to produce great motorcycles for everyone. HARLEY LIVEWIRE ELECTRIC MOTORCYCLE

At $30k for a starting price & with the current electric vehicle limitations, it will be somewhat of a novelty bike in my opinion. Again, it's Harley's first stab at the market and they had to start somewhere.
