By Bikers For Bikers
VIDEO-This is a thorough tutorial video on how to install a Vance & Hines Fuelpak 3 EFI tuner on your motorcycle, get it up and running, update the software, auto tune your motorcycle, and then flash that information to your engine control module (ECM)! From start to finish we have you covered in an extremely easy to understand & detailed free video.
In this video we use a Harley Davidson motorcycle. We show you how to install the Fuelpak 3 on your newer model Harley Davison motorcycle via the data link connector (DLC) also known as a CAN bus connector. We then show you the best solution for mounting your cell phone on your motorcycle handlebars with a Biker Gripper Cell Phone Motorcycle Mount, so you can view real time data on your smartphone directly from the Fuelpak 3 via bluetooth! That's right, no messy wires running under your tank and up your handlebars like many other EFI tuners require. We show you other tips, tricks, and functionality of the Fuelpak 3 in this video!
Save yourself money and don't rely on a dealership or technician to install and EFI tuner or auto tune your Harley. After watching this tutorial video you will definitely be able to install the Vance & Hines Fuelpak 3 on your own motorcycle right on the kickstand in your garage or on your patio! No specialty tools are needed.
If you get new head pipes, mufflers, or air intake on your motorcycle then you need to at least
do a basic re-map of your motorcycle's electronic fuel injection (EFI) or things will not run properly. The Fuelpak 3 is a great all in one solution for this.

Harley Davidson will charge you $200 plus to do this and you will only get a basic (canned) map & no auto tune. Then if you ever change anything you will be back in a Harley dealership giving them another $200 plus for a new basic canned EFI map. The Fuelpak 3 will allow you to easily do what the dealership does plus auto tune your bike over and over again.
We show you how to start with a pre-determined (canned) EFI map by Vance & Hines based on your particular pipe and intake set up. That gets you started and then you can get more detailed and run auto tune sessions and flash your ECM afterwards to really dial things in. We make this process super easy for you to understand and perform yourself. You can really increase the performance and efficiency of your motorcycle with the Fuelpak 3, so let us show you how & take the stress out of if.
Your stock Harley Davidson has narrow-band 12mm O2 sensors and the Fuelpak 3 uses those to tune your bike. Some other aftermarket EFI tuners use wide-band 18mm O2 sensors to tune. You must order special pipes with 18mm bungs to accept the larger O2 sensors or have them welded in. Many will say that you get broader readings and tuning capabilities with wide band O2 sensors. For the majority of every day bikers we think the stock 12mm O2 sensors are just fine for our needs and you would not notice any difference for simple EFI tuning needs.
Most bikers will flash their ECM with a canned map and then run some auto tune sessions. If you later want to become a tuning expert you can really mess around with adjusting individual cells and make your own custom maps based on a ton of readings right in the app on your smartphone. That process is for tuning experts only and not realistic for the every day biker, so we stay away from that and it is not shown in this video. You can damage your bike if you start doing that kind of advanced manual tuning unless you really spend a lot of time doing it and understanding it.
A great feature built into the Fuelpak 3 app is the ability to contact Vance & Hines directly from within. Additionally, from the app you can upload your auto tune session results to Vance & Hines. They can look at it, adjust it, and send it back to you in the app. Then you can flash your ECM with that new custom map! You can even turn on a feature that lets Vance & Hines see data readings of your running motorcycle remotely in real time. That is super cool!
The app also allows you to see a ton of data real time while you are riding right on the screen of your smartphone via the app. You can pick what you date items you want to display such as speed, engine temp, RPM's, throttle position sensor, just to name a few. That is why you will need a Biker Gripper Cell Phone Motorcycle Mount. The Fuelpak 3 app has a great user interface, is super easy to use, and easy to understand. It ran flawlessly during our testing and you never need a laptop or computer like many other aftermarket EFI tuners. Everything is done right from the Fuelpak 3 app!
Here is a picture of an auto tune I did. I was building on a previous map where I rode for about 60 miles. I then rode about 600 miles over a 2 week period. I rode on city streets, county roads, and state highways and this was the result. I then flashed my ECM with this auto tune map.

Vance & Hines Fuelpak 3 EFI Tuner
Summary
We fell in love with the Vance & Hines Fuelpak 3 EFI Tuner. The price is reasonable, it is super compact, easy to hook up, runs wirelessly via bluetooth, and has a free flawless easy to use smartphone app. An average day to day biker/motorcyclist can understand the process and get up and running. It is easy to set up and flash a canned map to your ECM right from your smartphone. Then it is a lot of fun running auto tune sessions and seeing real time data in the app while you are riding. Of course with the Biker Gripper Motorcycle Cell Phone Mount it is easy to see real time data while riding.
From within the app bikers can upload their auto tune results to Vance & Hines. Then V&H can look at it, adjust it if necessary, and send a map right back in the app. Then you can flash your ECM with a custom map. To us that is super cool and makes it very easy to get help if needed. And you can let V&H see real time data remotely while your bike is running if you choose!
We have nothing negative to say about our experience with the Fuelpak 3 and we think it is an all in one solution for bikers to tune their EFI.

Awesome video. No doubt I can do the work now. Will be ordering soon.
Ryan Urlacher says
Thanks R. Kane. Super glad the video was useful. You will definitely like it.
Ron says
Great video, thanks! Have you noticed any decrease in fuel mileage after flashing the new V&H map?
Ryan Urlacher says
Thanks Ron. No decrease in fuel mileage noticed at all.
Lenny says
Is there any benefit in installing this on a stock ’15 Lowrider? I plan on installing intake and pipes once my warranty is over. Afraid of MoCo voiding warranty with any aftermarket products they don’t install.
Thanks. Great video!!!
Matt Couchman says
Lenny,
I would highly recommend it when installing and intake and pipes. You can flash the computer in your garage and then run an auto tine session for optimal performance. The combo of the tuner, intake, and pipes will wake that beast up.

Thought this technology was beyond me until watching this video of the FP3. Is there any advantage to doing this to a completely stock 2015 TriGlide? Thank you Brian for all that you do. I will certainly contribute when I am able.
Matt Couchman says
You can raise the rev limited. You can also use the auto tune feature to really dial in your bike.
I’ll pass on your appreciation to Ryan.

Hello Ryan , I was wondering if you had any advise or knew of any resources on this question . I’m trying to figure out how to lower the cruise control initiation speed to a lower speed on my 2016 ultra limited. Its factory start is 45 kph and I’d like to get it down to 30kph initiation speed and if its possible though fp3 or any other way of accomplishing this ? I only ask becouse of a north shore Lake Erie waterfront trail that is about 1 1/2 to 2 hours and is a 25 to 30 kph speed zone and would like to run it in cruise control mode .
Ryan Urlacher says
Not aware of any way to do that Dave. I think it’s designed that way purposely. Cars also have a minimum speed you can set it at.
DARRYL WINCHESTER says
fuelpac3 yes since i installed it on my bike . my bike doesnt seem to run better at all it took away the poping but besides that i tried calling vance and hines for help and all i got was to run two full tanks of gas then try to auto tune my bike—-thats the help ive been getting from them
Ryan Urlacher says
That’s too bad. We’ve never experienced any problems whatsoever. Hard to diagnose with this bit of information. All I can say is put the correct EFI map that is recommended and auto tune. If that doesn’t work then I’d say you have larger issues, maybe with your ECM.
Tom F says
Ryan,
Do you happen to know if the FP3 will void the warranty on 2017s? I REALLY want the FP3 but am being scared into the HD SE Pro Street Tuner. I’ve talked to some dealers that have said anything other than the SE tuner will void the warranty yet they sell the FP3 at the dealer!! Please lend me your insight. Thanks.
Ryan Urlacher says
We did an entire Podcast Episode on the matter Tom. Listen in and you’ll get a ton fo info. Episode 125. https://www.lawabidingbiker.com/125/
David Carrera says
Do you still recommend the FP3? Did you have any issues with “cross talk” with the decatted head pipe? After watching your video I am thinking of going that exact route.
Thanks
David
Matt Couchman says
David,
Yes we still recommend the FP3. It’s what all of us use around here. I/we have not had any issues with cross talk.

Raf says
Can you use the V&H fuelpak with a different air intake, particularly a S&S cycle one? Or does it have to be a V&H intake?
Matt Couchman says
Raf,
You can use it with another brand air cleaner and exhaust for that matter. You can pick a canned map close to your setup or you can contact V&H for a custom map.

Will this benefit my 2004 twin cam 88 with stage one and S&S 510 cams with gear drive?
Matt Couchman says
Steve,
According to Vance and Hines website they only work on 2007 bikes and newer.

What does the FP3 pair with that makes it know what bike you’re on? If my ECM goes out, will I have to buy a new V&H FP3?
Ryan Urlacher says
The FP3 marries to the VIN on your bike and can only be used on that bike.
Rich Moore says
I bought an fp3 and will install it as soon as my mechanic finishes with my changes. I have a 2014 Super low 1200 and am getting the Vance and Hines Big radius 2into 2 chrome ,and a kuryakyn High five Mach 2 air cleaner, The Love Jugs slots style chrome fans ,extra chrome anywhere I can ,and so I am stoked to have great products like Love JUgs that are proven to work,at least helping a he’ll of a lot to keep heat down. Also wonderful innovations like the fp3which I bought this week and am confident it will make riding a better experience for an old 70 year old biker liKe me! The fp3 is cost effective and detailed. Great product!
