I have been busy lately instructing Basic Police Motorcycle School, which is being held in Spokane, WA this year. Make sure you see the Vlog I did last week on the first 3 days of our Police Motorcycle Instructor Workshop where we actually had to qualify as instructors on a technical riding course. This was to make certain we were qualified to be instructing brand new motorcycle officers. In that Vlog, I take you for a ride through the entire technical riding course and chase a few other bikes through it. See video here.
Police Motorcycle Instructor School Spokane, WaAfter qualification and the 3-day instructor workshop, all the instructors left for home. We returned the next Monday to Spokane, WA as all the new motorcycle officers were arriving for the actual two weeks Basic Police Motorcycle Operator's School that we'd be instructing. We as new instructors will also be evaluated as we instruct by the senior instructors.
The first days of Basic Police Motorcycle School is always difficult for students. Veteran officers will tell you that Basic Police Motorcycle School is the toughest school they have attended during their entire career. Yes, tougher than SWAT school. It's not uncommon for officers to fail the school and many are forced to drop out due to injuries of all kinds. It is both mentally and physically demanding and is often exhausting. Days prior to this school, an officer was doing basic pre-school practice with instructors and went down, breaking his leg and dislocating his ankle. Police Motorcycle School is not for the faint of heart.
During the 3-day instructor workshop, we got access to the Spokane County Raceway where we'll eventually take the students for high-speed riding and cornering. Instructors had the course to themselves for about 45 minutes and we got to throttle down. It was a blast and after some practice, we learned the lines, so we can later relate this to students. The course this day was wide open, however, during the actual school, there will be areas with cones where students have to slow a bit and take evasive action. Don't worry, there will be plenty of room for them to open it up and learn to ride at high speeds.
In this video, I'm riding my 2013 Harley-Davidson Electra Glide Police Edition. I take you on the high-speed course! Later we would ride and scout some off-road trails that we will be taking students on during the last week of school. It was still wet and a little sketchy, but still a great time. We want to show these new motorcycle officers the capabilities of their street bike and that it can do some off-road riding, but with limitations. We got to ride some beautiful trails in the Spokane, Wa area!
