In this episode, Lurch and I interview Chris Foster, who recently broke a  Guinness Book of World records riding a Pan America, which is Harley's first adventure-style motorcycle. 

Chris set out to visit all 51 National Parks in the lower 48 states in one motorcycle trip and he completed it! He normally rides a BMW adventure bike. However, Harley reached out to him and offered a Pan America for this trip and he couldn't say no. 

Chris is no stranger to very long motorcycle road trips and has traveled around the world in the past. He saw this new record attempt as a challenge.

Chris Foster has some crazy stories to tell about this newest world record trip and past trips. When riding in Mexico once, he was stopped by men with machine guns, who fired into the air, stopped him, asked questions, but finally, let him go to continue his travels. 

On this newest world record trip, Chris was actually struck by lightning while riding the Harley Pan America. Luckily, he survived to tell about it and it could have been much worse. These days, Chris says he doesn't mess around and when there is lighting happening while riding his motorcycle, he tries to find a safe place or shelter to wait it out. 

Chris has had many unforeseen issues during his long motorcycle road trips, has been in some other peculiar situations, and it was really fun talking to him. He also rode through Death Valley and it was 127 degrees. He's got more stories to tell than we have time for!

Chris really got to test the Harley Pan America out during this recent 54-day motorcycle road trip. Chris gives his opinion of the Harley Pan America and how it held up. I must say this was a true test.

In this episode, we go over the possibilities for the 2022 Harley-Davidson models. There are many rumors floating around out there and we can't wait to see what they actually have in store. They have a virtual launch on 01/26/22 that you can sign up for.

It has been confirmed that Harley will be cutting the Sporster 1200, Softail Slim, and Sport Glide from their cruiser lineup.

There are also many changes within the company such and an online system to pre-order your new Harley-Davidson. It seems there will be fewer models at dealerships and Harley wants you to pre-order. You can fill out a form and a dealership will contact you. 

Earlier this year, Harley created HD-1 Marketplace.  This allows customers to search used motorcycle inventory at Harley-Davidson dealers. The company also created the Harley-Davidson Certified program this year to help capture more of the used market and keep that business flowing through dealers.

Additionally, Harley-Davidson CEO Jochen Zeits took a $600,000 salary cut, but incentivized Zeitz with Stock Options to stay through 2024.

They and a few others from the Sworn Few Law Enforcement Motorcycle Club completed a recent 10-day 3500-mile motorcycle road trip from Washington State to Arizona. They have a ton of stories and it was fun hearing about this trip as I was not able to go.

Have you seen the new Harley 2021 Electra Glide Revival? It's part of Harley's new “Icons Collection”. Harley says this collection is, “an extraordinary series of motorcycles inspired by some of our most recognizable and sought-after models. Each Icon in the collection will celebrate H-D’s signature colors, designs and parts — along with the latest technology. A limited collection, each model will be individually numbered and only produced once. A new Icon will debut annually, with no more than two bikes released in any given year.”

We had special guest and long time Patron Member Russell Roberts on a mic for this podcast episode. He happened to be in our area, so of course, we offered up a mic! We give our thoughts and opinions about the new Electra Glide Revival and the overall Icons Collection Harley has introduced. We certainly all agree that it's a specialty motorcycle and will only appeal to a small segment of the market. Maybe this collection is a way to revive the rich history of Harley-Davidson and through social media posts, it may catch the eyes of those on the fence about buying a Harley? It may just be a way to get more eyes on their motorcycles. 

Last, we talk about Harley-Davidson reverting back to the cable clutch system on their 2021 touring models. From 2014 to 2020, Harley had a much better hydraulic clutch system on the touring line-up. This has really stunned many loyal Harley owners as many feel it's a backward step in technology. It feels cheap for Harley to do this and then not reduce the price of the motorcycle. After all, this is supposed to be a premium touring motorcycle? And now with a cable clutch? Really Harley?

The Harley hydraulic clutch system was a much better system and caused less hand fatigue. Plus, it was self-adjusting and always had a consistent pull and friction zone, unlike cable clutches. If you actually like some adjustment on the clutch lever itself on hydraulic systems, then there are many aftermarket adjusting levers to choose from.
