Throughout the creation process of this tutorial, I dedicated extensive time both in the workshop and on the road, immersing myself in every aspect of the IFCU. Despite the absence of accompanying instructions or information, I meticulously explored its functionalities, uncovering both its advantages and limitations.

In this video and article, I offer my holistic perspective, insights, and evaluations of the all-new Harley Digital Dash System. Let's delve into the details.
Harley Infotainment Control Unit (IFCU) Digital Dash System:
At this juncture, it's evident to me that Harley has taken heed of the missteps associated with the older Boom Box Infotainment System. The tighter reins exercised by engineers over the new IFCU suggest a more meticulous approach. While conversing with engineers and Harley representatives firsthand, it became apparent that although they didn't single-handedly develop the entire operating system, known as Skyline OS, they exerted greater influence and oversight during its development.
Overview:
Now, I'd like to delve into my comprehensive experience, thoughts, and assessments regarding the IFCU digital dash system, drawing from the extensive time I've invested in mastering its intricacies.
Before we dive too deeply, it's worth noting a prevailing trend among auto manufacturers: the development of operating systems for digital dash and infotainment systems, despite their primary focus not being software development. Over the years, consumers have become accustomed to encountering clunky and buggy in-dash auto systems with subpar user interfaces. Transitioning from the seamless operation of an iPhone to the often cumbersome interfaces of these systems can be jarring, a sentiment echoed in my own experiences, including with my Ford F-150.
My Experiences:
Consequently, many of us opt to bypass these built-in systems altogether, favoring the smoother experience offered by Apple CarPlay and treating the dash unit merely as a mirror. However, my encounter with the Harley IFCU defied expectations. Its responsiveness to touch and toggle commands, even with gloves, pleasantly surprised me. The interface, while resembling that of an auto manufacturer, is more intuitively organized than its predecessors, such as the Boom Box system. Despite a learning curve and numerous menus to navigate, the aesthetics and integration of digital gauges contribute to a visually appealing experience.
The clarity and size of the screen, coupled with features like the high contrast mode for sunny conditions, further enhance usability. In my opinion, it stands as the most responsive auto manufacturer digital dash system I've encountered thus far, though not without its minor flaws, which I'll address shortly.
Before delving into those nuances, it's crucial to note the subscription fee required for embedded navigation: $349 for 3 years, inclusive of live weather, traffic, and map updates. While some may balk at this additional cost, it's essential to contextualize it against the previous Boom Box, where map updates incurred fees ranging from $150 to $200 each time, without the added benefits of live weather and traffic. Whether the subscription model proves more favorable remains a matter for debate.
And for those considering whether to opt for embedded navigation, be aware that without it, you'll encounter a QR code prompting you to purchase it each time you access navigation on the IFCU.
Some Things I Don't Like & Glitches:
Before delving into the current glitches and issues I've encountered with the Harley infotainment control unit, it's crucial to acknowledge that, like all computers and electronic devices, this system necessitates software updates to iron out any kinks. This is a standard practice in the tech world, and the IFCU is no exception.
That being said, overall, my experience with the IFCU has been overwhelmingly positive. It stands as the most responsive auto manufacturer digital dash system I've encountered thus far, delivering a user-friendly interface that I've thoroughly enjoyed navigating.
However, it's essential to recognize that many of the issues I'll discuss are likely to be addressed and rectified with future updates. One notable inconvenience is the inability to view live weather in embedded navigation while in motion, a restriction that seems inconsistent given the system's overall functionality on the go.
For those uninterested in embedded navigation, Apple CarPlay offers a seamless alternative. My tutorial videos detail the process of purchasing and activating embedded navigation from the Harley-Davidson website.
An important limitation to note is that, at present, software update downloads are confined to PCs running Windows, leaving Mac users
without access. However, based on past trends seen with the Boom Box system, I anticipate that Mac support will be integrated in the future.
In my own testing, I did uncompress the update files to a USB memory drive using a Mac. While I was able to partially upload those files to the IFCU, the process encountered errors and ultimately failed to complete successfully. It appears that uncompressing the zipped files on a Mac triggers some form of error, necessitating the use of a PC running Windows for the time being.
Updating the Harley Infotainment Control Unit can be quite laborious. Recently, Harley has shifted control of IFCU updates to customers, introducing a complex process. To undertake this task, you'll require two USB Type C/Type A dual-type memory drives that meet precise requirements in terms of capacity and read/write speeds. It's crucial to note that no conversion cables or adapters from Type A to Type C can be utilized. Additionally, numerous zipped files must be downloaded, uncompressed, and then specific files loaded onto each USB drive, following a meticulous process and set of procedures to integrate them into the IFCU. To simplify this process, I've created detailed IFCU Tutorial Videos tailored for bikers, covering every aspect of the update procedure and how to use and operate the IFCU.
In my view, the Harley infotainment control unit should update via WiFi, akin to a smartphone or my Ford F-150 infotainment system. After all, considering that the IFCU is connected to WiFi, the current convoluted software update process seems unnecessary. This alternative approach would not only grant Harley control over system updates but also notify customers when an update is required. Presently, the only way for a customer to discern the need for an update is by frequently checking the Harley software and update page.
Regarding Android Auto, it's essential to acknowledge that Google discontinued development and support for two-wheel vehicles, rendering it unavailable on the Harley IFCU. This decision lies with Google rather than Harley.
As for satellite radio support, Harley engineers opted against it, citing the prevalence of smartphones capable of achieving more than satellite radio. While this decision may disappoint some users, it reflects a broader industry trend away from satellite radio.
Several software glitches hinder the user experience, including sporadic Bluetooth connectivity issues at startup and limitations in managing contacts and text messages. Voice commands with the internal system are sluggish, and certain menu items require touchscreen input rather than toggle or thumb pad navigation.
Despite these shortcomings, my tutorial videos provide comprehensive guidance on importing Ride Planner rides and navigating the system's features. It's worth noting that the IFCU is optimized for the Cardo wireless Bluetooth headset ecosystem, offering seamless compatibility with Harley branded and non-branded Cardo units alike.

The most pressing question on many minds, one that I'm unable to fully address at this juncture, is how the IFCU will fare in the long run—say, 5 or even 10 years down the road. After all, my previous Harley Street Glide Special served me faithfully for a decade before I upgraded to my 2024 model.
Concerns naturally arise regarding the long-term support Harley will provide for the Harley infotainment control unit. Will the system gradually slow down and experience lag over time? And if so, how will such issues be addressed by customer support? Additionally, the longevity of support from the third-party company responsible for developing the Skyline OS operating system is another pertinent consideration.
Ultimately, only time will provide the answers we seek.
